The Lookout, Dalkey
The Lookout Harbour Road is a high-end residential development overlooking Dalkey Island that provides 94 living units in two low-rise linked terraces with sea views.
Set on a 0.69ha hillside site in Dublin’s picturesque promontory of Dalkey, the Lookout Harbour Road development is for the developer Winterbrook Limited. The layout as two parallel terraces of four-storey blocks and a setback fifth floor follows a long tradition of high-end seaside apartments reminiscent of the glistening white parallel terraces from Dalkey to Hoath.
The design of balconies and white bricks project an image of abstract expression that recalls some of the avant-garde experimental housing of exclusive communal living of early modernism, complete with a communal 'sun room' and concierge facilities.
The design is a modern interpretation of the 19th Century maritime terrace typology.
The building is clad in a chalky-white brick with a white flush mortar, deep-metal clad window reveals - soft green grey in tone, projecting oriel/bay-windows and glazed balconies. The bay-windows create a sense of spatial generosity within apartment living rooms. Externally, a pattern emerges of projection and recess, light and shade, creating a sense of order, rhythm and depth to the facade. Balconies are staggered rather than stacked to improve their prospect from within, their sense of openness, and for sun penetration.
A setback penthouse with glass guardrails to terraces all round is clad in zinc and rusticated brickwork that creates an intricate overlap as the building meets the sky and links to the rusticated brick details at the base and surrounding garden wall.
